Plural nouns
Form regular and irregular plurals correctly.
The rules
- 1.Most nouns add -s: book → books.
- 2.Add -es after -s, -x, -ch, -sh: box → boxes. Change consonant + y to -ies: city → cities.
- 3.Some are irregular: child → children, man → men, woman → women, person → people, foot → feet, tooth → teeth.
- 4.Some never change: sheep, fish, series. Never add an apostrophe to make a plural.
Common mistakes and fixes
Incorrect: Three childs were playing.
Correct: Three children were playing.
Irregular plural.
Incorrect: Many peoples came.
Correct: Many people came.
"People" is already plural.
Incorrect: Two report's are ready.
Correct: Two reports are ready.
No apostrophe in plurals.
Watch out: Do not confuse plurals (reports) with possessives (the report's title).
